Solution mining

The application of the solution mining method for the extraction of carnallitite is accepted state of the art; it was designed and developed by the former potash research centre - the predecessor of K-UTEC AG Salt Technologies. The first extraction of carnallitite by solution mining worldwide has been operative at the Kehmstedt deposit in Germany for the last 30 years. This made it possible to collect extensive knowledge about this special mining extraction method.

For the mining of carnallitite in areas with sensible eco-systems, solution mining is the only suitable and appliable method that satisfies the authorities' demands. Solution mining is a safe method when cavern design and layout of the cavern field are based on established standards. The regulation of the solution mining field's development and of the regime with hot and cold dissolution in the caverns make a mining extraction without emmissions possible. This ensures a high recovery rate of the mineral resource in urban or ecologically sensitive areas with a minimal impact on the environment.

Based on more than 60 years of experience in the potash and salt industry K-UTEC AG can offer a full service for solution mining, geological modelling, resource and reserve analysis, geological investigations, geomechanical and chemical analysis as well as basic engineering for solution mining and processing.

We deliver and service the equipment needed for the operation of a solution mining field (blanket control system and seismic monitoring system) during the start up of a facility or a solution mining field. We can additionally offer training for the future operation staff at the respective facilities.

Blanket control systems

Blanket control systems (level control systems) are mainly used for solution mining of carnallitite in areas with sensible eco-systems. Solution mining is the only suitable and appliable method to mine carnallitite that satisfies the authorities' demands. The blanket control system was developed to monitor and regulate the dissolution level in a solution cavern.

Concept studies / concept development

In a deposit exploration project the preliminary stage of a feasibility study is the development of a geologic prospecting concept. It has to describe all necessary operations and methods precisely to receive detailed information about the deposit to be prospected.

These geological informations serve as input data for the creation of a model (deposit model) and the estimation of the available resources and/or reserves.

Prospecting of the deposit

Prospecting of an unknown or a less known deposit starts with the implementation of a prospecting concept on site and the collection of all geologic data and information gained (generation of a data pool).

The prospecting of a deposit can cover for example the following tasks:

Evaluation / Assessment

Based on the prospecting data gained an assessment and classification of the deposit(s) in question is carried out. The classification of the deposit(s) is realised according to effective national and/or international guide lines (standards and codes).

Estimation of resources and reserves

In mineral economics a resource is the highest available amount (concentration) of an ore or any other mineral in the Earth's crust.

This amount does not give information about the size of the deposit that could be extracted by mining.
This amount is called reserve basis. It is the part of the resource that fulfils the minimal specific physical and chemical criteria for the current state of the art of mining and production including concentration, quality, thickness and depth.
The reserve basis includes mineable reserves at the time as well as reserves that could be mined within a certain time period assuming technical and economical developments, all of which can be extracted economically.

Also the reserve basis does not give information about the actually available amount for mining. This amount is called reserve. The reserve is the amount within the identified reserve basis that can be at the time of determination economically and technically extracted or produced.
